All kinds of textile techniques lend themselves to what is known as code crafting:

• code knotting
• code weaving
• code knitting
• code braiding

The data encoded in fabric can be extracted by means of fabricanalysis. Of course the encoding used must be known to recover the original data. This can be used for textile steganography where secret information is hidden inside the textile structure.

Code crafting may be classified by the encoding that is used to represent the original data:

• bit crafting
• dna crafting
• ascii crafting

If the fabric is used to display visual codes, such as barcodes or QR codes, it also serves as a textile display.
