Code Knotting

Khipu (aka talking knots) are strands with knots at varying distances.
They were used as data recording devices in the Incan Empire and its predecessor societies. Their main use was for recording statistical data, but they also served as mnemonic devices and possibly even as a writing system, that could be deciphered by so called Quipucamayocs.
