E-textiles (aka electronic textiles) are textiles that have electronic components, such as sensors, displays and speakers embedded into the fabric. E-textiles are closely related to the field of wearable computing.
When taken to the extreme, all electronic functions would be embedded in side the thread, with no need for extra components. Different threads could serve as textile conductors, resistors, capacitors or inductors, so that the circuit board layout could be designed directly into the pattern of the fabric.
Of course this would require highly developed threads, that can maintain their electronic characteristics under all kinds of physical stress, as well as special CAD-software for the design of crafted circuit boards (CCBs) rather than printed ones (PCBs).
